Paška meets Syrian President al-Assad in historic parliamentary building

Slovak Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška met Syria's President Bashar al-Assad in the historic former Parliamentary building in Bratislava on April 29, Paška's spokesman, Jozef Plško, told the TASR newswire.

Paška informed the Syrian guest about the history of the Slovak parliament, dating back more than 160 years and the two representatives discussed bilateral co-operation, the situation in the Middle East and opportunities for co-operation in tackling the effects of the global economic crisis.

The event was also attended by Parliamentary vice-chairman and Smer party caucus leader Miroslav Číž, Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák, Slovak Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Syria Oldrich Hlaváček, opposition SMK caucus leader Guyula Bárdos, Slovak National Party (SNS) caucus vice-chairman Ivan Sasko, opposition SDKU MP Jozef Mikuš and HZDS MP Jozef Halecký.
