Representatives from the ethnic Hungarian SMK party on September 11 presented a joint declaration aimed at the reconciliation of Hungarians and Slovaks to Speaker of the Parliament Pavol Paška.
The declaration would include the Slovak and Hungarian Parliaments' expressions of regret over the controversial periods in both nations' shared history over the past 1,100 years. The document will also be sent to the speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, Katalin Szili.
Paška said that currently he didn't see any reason for adopting a complicated declaration on reconciliation between Slovakia and Hungary. He added that he has met Szili five times over the past year, but they haven't discussed adopting a declaration such as that now proposed by SMK.
Beginning September however, Paška conceded that he would make an agreement with Szili involving a document that would lay out conditions for the common future of the two nations; but it wouldn't deal with the problems of the past. TASR
