A passenger train crashed into a lorry at an unguarded crossing between the village of Dolné Naštice and the town of Bánovce nad Bebravou in Trenčín region on the afternoon of August 27, causing injuries to at least 14 people. The train driver had to be eased out of the locomotive with the “jaws of life” by firefighters.
“Two rescue helicopters and five ambulance cars were dispatched to the scene," Boris Chmel, spokesman of the Emergency Medical Service, told the TASR newswire, adding that most of the injured had fractures, or head and chest injuries.
The state-owned railway company Železničná Spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) announced that the stretch between Bánovce nad Bebravou and Rybany has been closed, and it is expected that it will not reopen until evening. Trenčín Regional Police spokeswoman Elena Antalová told TASR that the police will most probably launch an investigation into the crimes of endangering public safety and causing bodily harm. There were no reports on the condition of the lorry driver.
