THE JUSTICE Ministry has proposed an bill to parliament stipulating that some prisoners pay for their prison expenses.

The draft, submitted to parliament on April 10, suggests that prisoners pay for the food and clothing provided to them while serving their jail term. Jozef Korec from the ministry's prisons and criminal law section said that a moral dilemma had arisen in 1999 when retirement-age prisoners, or those unable to work for health reasons, continued to receive state pensions while the state covered their jail expenses.

"When they were released from jail, unlike other prisoners they had several thousand crowns in their bank accounts," Korec said.
