A November 23 appeal by a lecturer in the Faculty of Mechatronics of the Alexander Dubček Trenčín University (TnUAD), Peter Ponický, for the university s rector, Miroslav Mečár, to resign along with other top managers, has been followed by a petition that was launched on November 24 morning at the faculty. The faculty’s dean, Dušan Maga, said the petition has been circulated at other faculties and anyone can support it – students, employees, and even people outside the university if they feel like doing so.
The mastermind of the petition, Peter Ponický, was surprised by the media interest as well as the fact that the rector himself Miroslav Mečár reacted to it. “His reaction was negative, however,” Ponický told the TASR newswire.
“If all indirect evidence show that there was a flaw from the side of the university management and the rector is, moreover, directly involved in several court trials, he cannot react by saying he would comment only after the investigation committee has finished its work. We cannot act in academia like a politician,” Ponický said, adding that the top management has to acknowledge it has been harming the university.
“It is the rector who is, as the statutory representative of the institution, the partner for the accreditation committee and for the minister [of education],” said Maga, who stressed that neither the rector nor anyone from the university’s management has ever reacted to the objections of the leadership of the Faculty of Mechatronics concerning the comprehensive accreditation.
