The price of motor fuel prices in the European Union rose significantly last week. Tomáš Novotný from the website Natankuj.sk said that petrol prices within the EU rose by over two cents per litre on average and diesel price by around 1.5 cents per litre, the SITA newswire reported. Diesel prices hit a one-year high in 15 EU countries, while petrol prices hit a one-year high in 18 countries.
Petrol and diesel prices dropped in only one country last week: Romania, where they declined by an average of 0.002 euros/litre. Petrol prices went up in 23 countries and diesel in 22. Slovakia fell from fifteenth place to sixteenth in the ranking of the EU’s lowest petrol prices. In the ranking of diesel prices, Slovakia kept its fourteenth place from a week ago. Compared with other Visegrad Group countries (i.e. the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary) and Austria, Slovakia has the most expensive petrol once taxes are included. Excluding taxes, petrol prices are the second lowest after Austria. "What's more, we are the sixth cheapest country in the EU," SITA quoted Novotný as saying on Thursday, February 23. The average price in the 7th week of 2012 was €1.506 per litre, while the price of diesel was €1.439 per litre, the TASR newswire quoted the www.benzin.sk website as reporting.
