Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico will be attending an economic forum called Poland – Central Europe – China in Warsaw on April 26 and is expected to meet with his counterparts Viktor Orbán (Hungary), Donald Tusk (Poland) and Wen Jiabao (China) in bilateral talks during his brief visit to Poland. The event is focused on economic cooperation and joint growth of central-European countries and China, the Slovak Government Office told the SITA newswire.
Fifteen prime ministers of central-European counties have been invited to Warsaw.
Fico has already told the media the Slovakia’s state citizenship law will not be among the topics in his talks with Orbán.
"I want to assure you that I will go to these talks only with economic and social topics and mutually advantageous economic projects; I do not have a reason to open other topics with the Hungarian partners," Fico stated, as quoted by SITA.
SITA wrote that PM Fico said last week that the government has an unfulfilled task, which is to correct the law on citizenship so that it does not damage citizens of Slovakia who apply for citizenship of some other country and then as a result of the law lose their Slovak citizenship.
"In relation to Hungary, this law will certainly remain in effect because the law there is valid to which we reacted with our legislation," Fico stated, as quoted by SITA. Hungarian officials responded that if the new Slovak government changes the citizenship law in a way that discriminates against Slovakia's ethnic Hungarians who acquire Hungarian citizenship, it will take legal steps against Slovakia at international courts. Fico later reacted by saying that such a start of Slovak-Hungarian relations would not be very fortunate, SITA reported.
