Since the term of Public Procurement Office (ÚVO) head Béla Angyal is to expire soon, the functionality of the office should be ensured by an amendment to legislation, Prime Minister Robert Fico said on February 22, the SITA newswire wrote.
“Let's amend the law and await election results. The ruling coalition, whichever party is in power – while nobody knows which one it will be – will nominate opposition representatives to the ÚVO. I consider this the correct solution,” Fico told the SITA newswire. He does not think that a fast-track legislative procedure is necessary.
Transparency International Slovensko (TIS) proposed picking a new chairman for ÚVO in an open contest in which candidates for the post would be required to show their professional skills in the field. They should present to experts and the public a vision for ÚVO management for the next five years, TIS said, adding that it does not agree with political nomination, by the ruling coalition or by the opposition.
