Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová, responding to Germany's definitive decision to shut down all its nuclear power plants by 2022, said in Ljubljana on May 30 that Slovakia has no other option than applying an energy mix in its policy, the TASR newswire reported.
Radičová said that safety is an important consideration and Slovakia is ready to carry out stress tests at its nuclear plants.
"As far as I'm informed, our blocks meet the highest safety criteria," said Radičová during her one day visit to Slovenia, as quoted by TASR, noting that as much as a half of Slovakia’s electricity comes from nuclear sources.
"A decision to shut down our nuclear energy completely would mean replacing the missing 50 percent," Radičová said at a news conference following the meeting with her Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor.
She added that not even all the alternative solutions at hand combined would be able to cover such a gap.
“We are ready for stress-tests; our plants fulfil high safety criteria,” she stated, reacting to the statement of German Environment Minister Norbert Röttgen made on May 30 in which he said Germany would completely close its nuclear energy production by 2022.
