A blast at the Euromont factory in Topoľčany (Nitra Region) on Tuesday, August 25, morning was triggered by explosives, Police Corps President Ján Packa said later in the day.
The explosives were brought on to the company site by an unknown man who later died from injuries caused by the blast. Packa added that Euromont's employees didn't recognise the man, but confirmed that he was of Slovak ethnicity and was probably a local.
Further information will be provided after the investigation is concluded, Packa added. A total of five people were injured in the explosion at the factory, which took place shortly after 11:20 on Tuesday. Two helicopters transported them to hospital. The pressure wave from the blast shattered all the windows and led to a fire at the plant, which produces plastics.
“A gas explosion has been reported. An emergency team has been sent to the factory. A fire broke out, but it has already been extinguished. As far as the injured are concerned, three people were seriously hurt while two others suffered minor injuries,” Jozef Burza from the Topoľčany Fire Brigade told the TASR newswire earlier in the day.
