Police charge Slovenská Pospolitosť leader with racial defamation

A police investigator has charged Marián Kotleba, the leader of the far-right organisation Slovenská Pospolitosť (Slovak Togetherness), age 32, with the crime of defaming nationality, race and political and religious opinions, Police Corps vice-president Stanislav Jankovič said at a press conference on Monday, August 24, the TASR newswire reported.

“(Kotleba) as a speaker at a gathering in Šarišské Michaľany in Prešov region attacked ethnic groups, races and nationalities several times,” said Jankovič.

The police arrested Kotleba at his home in Banská Bystrica on Saturday, August 22, the morning before a rally organised by Slovenská Pospolitosť against so-called ‘Roma criminality’ took place in Krompachy in Košice region. Kotleba is being prosecuted without being confined. If Kotleba is found guilty, he could face a prison sentence of 1 to 3 years. TASR
