REDUCING the number of road accidents is the main goal of the Slovak police force in 2011, said Police Corps president Jaroslav Spišiak, who offered to resign if his officers did not meet this year’s goals.
Spišiak added that some of the specific indicators do not need to be fully achieved but the overall result must be met, meaning that other goals would need to be exceeded. He stated the police force should primarily protect lives, secondarily health, and only then property, the SITA newswire wrote.
“I have an ambition to gain people’s support by informing them in advance about the goals that I’ve set,” Spišiak said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. He said the most importance would be placed on his traffic goals, followed by crimes affecting people’s health and lives. Spišiak said he wants the number of road accidents to be 5,000 less than in 2010, when 16,595 were reported.
Road safety in Slovakia improved in the first two months of 2011 compared to the same months last year.
“The number of traffic accidents in 2010 […] was a new record low, almost extraordinary. Our results [this year] are even better than this record,” Spišiak stated.
He said there were 89 murders in Slovakia last year. “We may patrol the streets as best we can, but there will probably be some murders anyway,” Spišiak opined.
He stated that another specific objective for the police force is to increase by 10 percent the number of murders that are solved.
