Police inspectorate proposes to file charges against elite unit investigating top corruption cases

Investigation lasted two and a half years.

They have faced charges for almost three years, Smer and Hlas politicians have attacked them, they spent two weeks in custody, and Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok (Hlas) suspended them just two days after taking office last October.

The investigation concerning a group of National Crime Agency (NAKA) investigators led by Ján Čurilla, who handled the cases of of former Smer-led government nominees, has now been closed by the Interior Ministry’s police inspectorate. The investigator proposed filing charges with the court, the inspectorate’s spokesperson Andrea Dobiášová said.

The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Trnava will decide whether the charges will be filed in court.

“We are very much looking forward to this matter finally going to court. The court will evaluate the case independently and impartially,” said the group’s lawyer Peter Kubina, citing an earlier decision on the detention of charged NAKA investigators.
