THE POLICE corps fraud squad has denied claims by former prime minister Vladimír Meeiar that he was questioned in connection with an alleged Sk41 million ($860,000) he spent on repairs to his Elektra villa in 1999.

"Meeiar was never even called upon by officers of the fraud division to explain matters in this case," said top fraud officer Július Molnár.

Milan Polák, the head of the fraud police in Treneín district, which has jurisdiction over the Elektra case, resigned on May 20, apparently in relation to the failure of the police to follow up indications Meeiar had spent many times his legal income on the villa.

Meeiar has refused to discuss how much money he spent rebuilding Elektra, saying "it is possible" the reconstruction cost Sk41 million rather than the Sk5 million he has claimed so far.
