A 34-YEAR-OLD police officer was shot and killed while attempting to check the driver of a passenger car in the village of Boleráz, near the western-Slovak town of Trnava, on the night of June 14.
“The police officer suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene,” Trnava Regional Police Directorate spokesperson Martina Kredatusová said, as quoted by the TASR newswire. “The police have apprehended the 31-year-old suspect and have charged him with murder.”
The police declined to provide any further details.
Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák expressed his condolences to the bereaved family members of the police officer.
“This tragic event demonstrates that police officers are exposed to tough work on a daily basis, so I immensely value the engagement of every member of the Police Corps,” said Kaliňák, as quoted by TASR.
The Nový Čas tabloid daily reported on its website that the driver from Bratislava, identified only as Milan Sz., was intoxicated. A shoot-out followed after the driver shot the police officer, with a female colleague of the officer firing against the offender’s car. A total of 11 shots hit the car, while five shots struck the police VW Golf. Nevertheless, the driver managed to escape, though the police detained him two hours later after a shooting at his home.
Milan Sz. owned the gun legally, along with other two firearms, including a sub-machine gun.
The late police officer, identified only as Peter, was a native of Boleráz, where he lived with his mother and sister.
