Trnava police officer Marián Mišún, who burned an EU flag at the ‘Together for a Decent and Safe Life’ protest march on Saturday, November 11, will lose his job, Trnava police chief Igor Kelesi confirmed to the TASR newswire on Wednesday. The former regional head of the Matica Slovenska cultural heritage organisation in Púchov, Mišún, is currently on leave, and set to return to work on November 19. His superior initially wanted to wait for a court verdict first before taking any action, but has since changed his mind.
Saturday's protest march was organised by Mišún and Oskar Dobrovodský, who has allegedly been entangled in a long-term dispute with his Roma neighbours in Malacky. Dobrovodský abandoned his property in September.
On Tuesday, Bratislava District Court found Mišún guilty of rioting and imposed a fine equalling €300 and a two-year ban on entering Bratislava. The accused, who filed an appeal, does not think that he committed any crime and hopes that the higher court will re-qualify his actions to a misdemeanor. "I consider this to be a political trial," he claimed. According to the verdict, if he chooses not to pay, he will go to jail for three months.
