The police Bureau Against Organised Crime in the early hours of May 24 carried out a series of raids in Bratislava and arrested eight people suspected of being involved in various violent and economic crimes, Police Corps spokesperson Andrea Dobiašová told the TASR newswire later.
Because of the early stage of investigation the police cannot provide any further information at this time, Dobiašová said.
The news portal čas.sk reported that one of the suspects is a 46-year-old man whose name appeared in the so-called 'Mafia lists' that leaked from the police back in 2005. The man's name was also supposed to have been mentioned in the media two years ago in connection with a dispute over the ownership of a well-known Slovak mineral water brand, according to čas.sk.
The news portal added that a prosecutor had imposed a news embargo on Tuesday's raid and the police are reportedly planning to discuss it only after a court decides upon the custody status of the accused. According to unconfirmed information obtained by TASR, the man in question is supposedly one of two brothers who worked for the police in 1990s and later ran a network of nightclubs among other business activities.
