The police department’s Office for the Fight Against Corruption has officially launched an investigation of the malfunctioning tax system within Slovakia’s Financial Administration, reviewing several issues, including why the Financial Administration (FA) substituted the old tax information system administered by Novitech company with a new KONS information system provided by IBM, the Sme daily reported.
“It is good that it [the reason why the system does not work properly] will be investigated,” said the outgoing State Secretary (i.e. deputy minister) of the Finance Ministry, Vladimír Tvaroška, as quoted by Sme, adding that the damage caused by the system has already cost the state more than €30,000.
The new system was to be launched as of February 1, 2012 but some components still do not run properly and the provider of the new software has admitted that it will not be possible to launch the UNITAS system as of January 1, 2013, Sme wrote.
Miroslava Slemenská, the spokesperson for the FA, said that the investigation is the result of a criminal complaint filed with the police by the head of the FA, Mária Machová, after Slovakia’s Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) determined that the law on public administration had been violated, Sme wrote.
