A traffic policeman has been found guilty of accepting a bribe.
A Bratislava district court sentenced Roman S., 31, to a one year suspended sentence. The court also banned Roman S. from working in the civil service. Roman S. vowed to appeal the October 23 verdict.
According to court transcripts, Roman S. stopped an Austrian national for speeding August 8 and demanded he pay a fine of Sk10,000 ($210). The maximum fine traffic police can require on the spot is Sk500 ($11). The driver gave him 2,000 Austrian Shillings (Sk6,500) and continued on his way home. Shortly before the Slovak border crossing with Austria, another policeman stopped the car and asked for a bribe. The driver later reported the incidents to the Slovak police.
