When Bratislava failed in the vote to become the new location for a prestigious EU agency, the decision resonated with part of the public as an unjust one, and symptomatic of the EU's little regard for its "new" member states.
Politico mentioned this issue again in their compilation of the winners and losers of 2017, listing Slovakia among the latter, arguing that it is "the perfect example of how the EU’s newest members have seen their prospects fall as the Franco-German axis expands toward the Brexit vacuum and rising nationalism in the region is met by calls for a multispeed (read Eastern and Western) Europe".
Apart from Slovakia's failure to become the post-Brexit location of the European Medicines Agency, Politico noted that Finance Minister Peter Kazimir did not get to helm the Eurogroup even though he had been mentioned among the favourites prior to the vote.
