Close to half of Slovaks agree with the introduction of registered partnerships that would put same-sex couples on an equal footing with married men and women, albeit with no right to adopt children, gay rights group 'Iniciatíva Inakosť' (Initiative Otherness) said on Tuesday, August 14.
The organisation was referring to a survey that Focus agency carried out with 1,026 respondents in July. Of those asked, 9 percent were strongly in favour of same-sex registered partnerships, while another 38 percent said that they are inclined to support such an idea. Meanwhile, 23 percent voiced strong disapproval of such unions, while another 15 percent leaned towards rejection, the TASR newswire quoted the poll. Another 15 percent were unable to answer the question. The poll also showed that Slovaks have become slightly more tolerant towards the issue over time. In a similar survey carried out in 2008, a combined 42 percent of the respondents expressed resolute or relative support for same-sex partnerships, while 45 percent opposed them.
