Only 21 percent of respondents think that Slovakia is on the right track, with 74 percent unhappy with the way the country is heading, reads a recent poll by the Institute of Public Affairs (IVO) carried out between November 29-December 12 on a sample of 1,048 respondents. In November 2010, 40 percent were content with the way Slovakia was going, with 47 percent expressing criticism, the TASR newswire reported.
"A critical opinion is prevalent not only among opposition sympathisers but also former voters of current government parties who believed that the country was moving in the right direction just a year ago," said Zora Bútorová of IVO as quoted by TASR. "The greatest loss of optimism is seen among the sympathisers of SDKÚ [the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union], SaS [Freedom and Solidarity] and Most-Híd."
Voters of the outgoing coalition are disappointed about the unfulfilled expectations and the shortened term of the government, whereas voters of the opposition have rejected the policies of Iveta Radičová's government as a whole from the start and want to see a change in course of the country in the election. Both camps are most concerned with the potential or current adverse effects of the global crisis.
