MORE then three quarters, 77.6 percent, of Slovaks are in favour of Slovakia's entry to the European Union, while only 17.5 percent are against it, according to a Focus agency opinion poll.
According to the survey, conducted between April 4 and 8 on a sample of 1,047 respondents, accession is especially welcomed by people under 35, secondary school and university graduates, citizens of larger cities, inhabitants of the Bratislava and Nitra regions, and supporters or sympathisers of the ruling coalition parties, the news wire TASR wrote.
By contrast, Slovakia's entry to the EU tends to meet the disapproval of respondents over 55, citizens of municipalities with populations under 2,000, inhabitants of the Trenčín and Banská Bystrica regions, manual workers and pensioners, and voters of the opposition Communist Party and Movement for a Democratic Slovakia party.
Both support for and resistance to EU entry have remained relatively stable over the past three years.
As for the benefits and disadvantages of EU membership, 17.9 percent believe the benefits will prevail, while 28.1 percent claim the opposite. A majority of the respondents, 47.5 percent, said the number of benefits and disadvantages would be about the same.
Slovakia is one of the 10 countries due to join the EU on Saturday, May 1.
