The governing Smer party remains the most popular among Slovak voters, with 37-percent support, according to an opinion poll carried out by the Focus agency between November 28 and December 4 and published on Monday, December 17, the TASR newswire reported.
Trailing some way behind Smer were the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) on 11.9 percent, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) on 8.4 percent, Most-Híd on 7.7 percent, and Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO), both on 7 percent. OĽaNO's support was down by 2 percentage points compared to the last Focus poll, conducted earlier in November.
Parties failing to clear the 5-percent threshold required to win seats in parliament included the Slovak National Party (SNS) with 4.8-percent, the New Majority (NOVA) party – launched in the autumn by independent MP Daniel Lipšic – with 3.7 percent, and the Hungarian Community Party (SMK) with 3.5 percent. Around 23.5 percent of the 1,034 respondents said that they would not have voted in an election if one had taken place between November and December, while 16.7 percent said that they did not know for whom they would have voted or did not choose to answer.
