SLOVAK President Ivan Gašparovič thinks that every solution, including early elections, should be considered in the current political situation, provided that it helps eliminate existing political tensions.
In an interview with the Pravda daily, Gašparovič suggested that he would probably agree to appoint Jirko Malchárek as the new economy minister, in line with Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda proposal. He added, however, that “the PM must consider who is he putting in this post, and under what circumstances”.
According to Gašaprovič, the situation following this Sunday’s special congress of the ruling New Citizen’s Alliance Party as well as the parliamentary session, which starts on September 12, will clarify the current political situation.
The president said that he would also have to “consult with the PM on what his idea on his power and stability in parliament and the cabinet is”.
Gašaprovič would like the cabinet to initiate a vote of confidence in parliament to see what is “ the real power of the coalition”. The president thinks this would be a transparent solution to the problem.
