President Ivan Gašparovič has appointed 12 judges for an indefinite period of time in a ceremony also attended by Justice Minister Tomáš Borec and Supreme Court Chairman Štefan Harabin.
“If you act in line with the law, the Constitution and agreements to which Slovakia is a party, in conjunction with your own sense of responsibility, then you’ll gain the confidence of people as well as in yourself,” he said April 29, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
Gašparovič noted that the judiciary continues to lose credibility among the general public. “It’s up to you to get it back, to make people trust judges and courts again, to make sure that Slovakia is viewed as a country with judges who cater to democratic life in Slovakia,” he said.
All 12 newly-appointed judges will work at district courts in various parts of the country.
The appointed judges include Katarína Krochtová, who is to work at the District Court Bardejov. She won the tender for this position at the time when her brother chaired this court; in the meantime, Karol Krochta was dismissed by Justice Minister Tomáš Borec, the SITA newswire wrote.
At the Bratislava I District Court, Jana Janics Bajánková will work, the daughter of chair of the civil-legal senate and justice of the Supreme Court Jana Bajánková, who is running for the post of SC president.
Other judges appointed by Gašparovič include Viktória Bagala Vrábelová
(District Court Levice), Miroslava Korbašová (District Court Martin), Zuzana Kotríková (District Court Prievidza), Michaela Kotusová Hucová (District Court Košice II), Martina Líšková (District Court Topoľčany), Silvia Majkutová Lesňáková (District Court Liptovský Mikuláš), Viera Malinowská (District Court Malacky), Gabriela Repková (District Court Považská Bystrica), Karol Rihák (District Court Bratislava IV) and Adriana Šimková (District Court Malacky).
