Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič returned a package of amendments to the law on judges to parliament and the Sme daily wrote on November 8 that the primary reason was changes that were made in the election process for members of Slovakia’s Judicial Council.
"The amendment strips judges of their fundamental democratic right to elect Judicial Council members,” stated the chairman of the Judicial Council, Štefan Harabin, as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that the changes are set to occur just before the election of members of the Judicial Council and the amendments were approved without any expert discussion.
TASR wrote that the president has objections to some of the procedures featured in the legislation on election of Judicial Council members.
