The Presidential Office said August 28 that President Schuster's planned ascent of the highest mountain in Slovakia, Mt Gerlach in the High Tatras (2,655m), has been cancelled. The climb, which Schuster had invited central European presidents to attend, had been planned for September 12.

Schuster said the cancellation was due to the negative stance of the media on the event. He added he still thought the climb could have been an effective way of promoting Slovakia, and accused the media of having been unjustly critical of his plans due to his last year's serious health problems.
