SLOVAK President Ivan Gašparovič called for all countries to join together to fight global warming, at a speech at a climate change conference at United Nations headquarters on September 24.

Gašparovič said action on global warning is needed as soon as possible, the public Slovak Radio reported. He cited scientists' warning that ecosystems would be not able to adapt quickly enough to the rapid increase of air temperature, and that this would lead to worsening conditions for life on the planet.

The Slovak Republic wants to actively join the fight against pollution, which is behind global warming, Gašparovič said. Slovakia has bound itself to reduce its average carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent by 2020, compared with 1990 levels.

Gašparovič said that due to its economic growth, Slovakia is considering widening its use of nuclear energy. Slovakia has had good experiences with nuclear power and considers it to be a reasonable and environmentally-acceptable source of energy, he said.
