Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič will under no circumstances appoint general-prosecutor-elect Jozef Čentéš for the position, president's spokesperson Marek Trubač told the SITA newswire.
“The president decided ultimately there is no alternative decision,” Trubač said, adding that the process of electing Čentéš was finished by him not being appointed based on reasons announced by Gašparovič to Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška.
"The president did not accept the proposal of parliament to appoint Čentéš, and sent the decision with reasons on nine pages to the speaker of parliament. Thus, he considers Čentéš’ candidacy to be concluded,” Trubač told SITA, adding that the president’s verdict was finished long ago and published on January 2. Čentéš contested the president’s actions at the Constitutional Court, where the appeal became mired in numerous complaints of bias issued by both Čentéš and Gašparovič against various justices of the Constitutional Court. Smer passed an amendment in a fast-tracked proceeding that effectively allows the case to be handled by the first panel of judges assigned to it. However, the amendment has not been signed into law by president yet.
