A state of crisis and a third-degree flood alert were declared in the town of Prievidza on Sunday, August 15, at 14:00, the TASR newswire reported. The overflowing Handlovka River shortly after noon submerged several roads in the town as well as a road connecting Prievidza and the nearby town of Handlová.
Additionally, local neighbourhoods and several houses were flooded and the water level in the river continued to rise. The town was partially cut off from the rest of the world, as roads connecting the town with Žilina, Martin and Trenčín were all under water. Locals say this is the most extensive flooding caused by the Handlovka in decades.
The Nitra River also began to spill over the right-hand side of the dam near the town of Nováky, Marián Jursa, the head of the water-management company in Upper Nitra area told TASR. Jursa was referring to information reported by Nováky Mayor Dušan Šimko. A total of six villages and two towns (Handlová and Prievidza) had been inundated on Sunday, according to Jursa.
