Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico claimed at a government session on May 20 that Justice Minister Štefan Harabin filed an ineffective proposal about measures against illegally gained property. The PM made this statement to the TASR newswire when leaving a meeting of the Association of Towns and Villages of Slovakia (ZMOS). On May 20 the government interrupted its discussion about the proposal, as Harabin said he was leaving for a trip abroad. According to Fico, the motion has too few suppressive measures.
The new law was proposed to fill the legislative gap caused by the original law on origin of property being deemed unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court on September 3, 2008, on the basis that it intervened too harshly in ownership rights and could violate the principles of the state respecting law.
The proposed law is aimed at people who fail to explain the origin of their property if its value exceeds 1000-times the minimum wage and if there is suspicion that the property came from illegal sources. TASR
