Prime Minister says Slovakia satisfied with the results of EU summit

The crucial summit held in Brussels on December 9 did not turn out according to the wishes of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicholas Sarkozy as only 23 countries of the European Union, including Slovakia, agreed on establishment of a so-called fiscal union. The United Kingdom strongly rejected the changes and other member states asked for more time to make a final decision, the Sme daily wrote on December 10.

Though the European leaders did not reach an agreement on all issues, such as joint EU bonds, Prime Minister Iveta Radičová said right after the meeting that Slovakia is satisfied with the results of the EU summit, as it considers a fiscal agreement as the only way of responding to the current crisis in Europe.

“We have managed to seal a fiscal agreement,” said Radičová, as quoted by the TASR newswire, adding that the agreement involves a commitment to adhere to agreed rules and at the same time a mechanism to enforce these rules.
