Prime minister warns foreign investors

At a conference about the current economic crisis on Tuesday, March 17, organised by the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Prime Minister Robert Fico warned foreign investors that if they decide to leave Slovakia during the crisis, they may expect a harsh reaction from the Slovak government.

He reminded them that the government has provided some of them with public subsidies worth billions of Slovak crowns, which “Slovak businessmen and local investors can only dream of.”

However, he confirmed that the government would keep creating favourable conditions to attract new foreign investors, since Slovakia is interested in investments, the SITA newswire wrote.

Fico said that some investors, in coming to Slovakia, did not come to help the country but to make a profit. Moreover, they received huge subsidies from the Slovak government for their investment projects. For these reasons, if these companies decide now to close their businesses in Slovakia, they may expect a harsh reaction from the Slovak government. If, for example, French companies withdraw production from Slovakia, he said his government would punish the French companies that remain. SITA
