The participation of prisoners in the presidential election on March 21 was 58.64 percent, higher than the rate of citizens who are not incarcerated but much lower than in the previous election. Five years ago, 84.9 percent of prisoners and suspects in custody took part in the vote for president.
The total number of eligible voters in Slovak prisons and detention centres was 8,376 people, the Slovak Justice Ministry and the Corps of Prison and Judicial Guards informed the TASR newswire on March 23.
The biggest turnout, at 91.14 percent, was in Hrnčiarovce nad Parnou and the smallest, at 9.06 percent, was in the Detention Centre for Youth in Sučany. In the women’s prison in Nitra-Chrenová, the participation rate was 34.62 percent. A participation rate of 83.07 percent was recorded in the Bratislava Detention Institution.
