Private sector employment in Slovakia shrinks by 9.1 percent in March

The number of Slovak employees in the non-governmental sector of the economy continued to fall in March, going down by 9.1 percent from a year earlier, the SITA newswire reported. The data released by Slovakia’s Statistics Office showed that wholesale businesses reported a decline in staff by 19.8 percent in March, information and communication technologies by 15.2 percent and restaurants and hotels by 9.5 percent y-o-y.

The number of employees in sale and repair of motor vehicles was 9.4 percent lower in annual terms. Employment in the sector of accommodation dropped 8.1 percent and selected market services posted a decrease of 6.3 percent. The number of employees in the construction sector fell by 3.4 percent. The retail sector reported a drop of 3.2 percent and the sectors of transportation and warehousing saw a y-o-y decline of 1.8 percent.

The January-March period brought the deepest y-o-y decline in employment in the wholesale business (down 19.9 percent). The sector of information and communications technologies reported a drop of 13.3 percent. The number of employees also went down in pubs and hotels (11.7 percent), manufacturing (12 percent), distribution and repairs of motor vehicles (10.3 percent), accommodation (9.4 percent), selected market services (4.4 percent), construction (2.8 percent), retail sales (2.6 percent) and in the sectors of transportation and storage (2.4 percent).
