Kia Motors Slovakia launched production of petrol engines at its new plant in Teplička nad Váhom (Žilina Region) on Thursday, September 29, with Prime Minister Iveta Radičová in attendance at the official ceremony, the TASR newswire reported. The investment, worth €100 million, will boost production capacity from 300,000 to 450,000 engines per year, with 270 jobs being created.
Radičová highlighted the importance of the investment for northern Slovakia. "It's not only the total of 1,000 jobs as of the first quarter of next year and all the new jobs in the new plant. It's, first and foremost, thousands of jobs in subcontracting firms," said the prime minister. "And I was pleased to learn that many car parts for Kia Motors are supplied by Slovak firms," she added.
"This is a significant year for us. We produced what was our millionth engine back in May," said Myung-Chul Chung, the president and chief executive of Kia Motors Slovakia.
