MORE than 40 MPs have signed the proposal to amend the constitution in order to protect marriage as a unique bond between a man and a woman.
The Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) presented the proposal in mid-January, arguing that marriage deserves protection. The KDH proposes to insert two sentences into the text of the Constitution claiming that marriage is a unique bond between one man and one woman and as such the state protects it.
Dozens of MPs from all parliamentary parties except the ruling Smer have since supported the proposal.
“Marriage is such a basic and important thing that it deserves a clear stance and personal responsibility,” KDH chairman Ján Figeľ said, as quoted by the SITA newswire, adding that the support among MPs for the law is exceptional.
Figeľ argues that the state and society must take responsibility for the sake of children who deserve to grow up in a family based on marriage.
A constitutional change requires a majority of 90 MPs, which cannot be achieved without the support of the ruling Smer MPs. Parliament will debate the proposal at its March session.
