A controversial legal amendment to require that every gun-licence holder takes a mandatory psychological test at least once in their lifetime may be introduced later this year.
The amendment is the Interior Ministry’s reaction to the 2010 massacre in the Bratislava district of Devínska Nová Ves, during which a gunman killed seven people and wounded 15 others before he was shot dead by police. The original draft introduced psychological tests for every gun-licence holder every five years. It would also have reduced the validity of licences from ten to five years, the SITA newswire wrote.
However, that draft ran into opposition from several coalition deputies, and discussion of it was postponed until the March parliamentary session. The parliamentary committee for defence and security informally discussed the draft amendment on Tuesday, March 15. The committee members should informally discuss the draft with representatives of the Interior Ministry on Monday.
