Radiation detectors have been installed and put into operation at three border crossings between Slovakia and Ukraine, according to a statement by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), the US Embassy in Slovakia and the Customs Administration of Slovakia on October 29, the SITA newswire wrote.
"Slovakia and the United States are cooperating closely on stopping the smuggling of nuclear material. This partnership plays an important role in the global fight against illegal trade in nuclear material and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction," the statement provided to SITA cites William Tobey of the NNSA.
On the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Slovakia dating back to 2006, the NNSA is providing the Slovak Customs Administration with appropriate communication equipment for detecting radiation and conducting training on five border crossings.
