Iveta Radičová, the outgoing Prime Minister of Slovakia and Deputy Chairperson of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) party announced she will not be a candidate for parliament in the elections on March 10 at a news conference after a meeting of the SDKÚ presidium on October 24, the SITA newswire reported.
But Radičová told the press that she is not quitting politics at this time and she will keep her post in the SDKÚ until a party congress is held within six months after the parliamentary elections, as required by the party’s statutes.
The SDKÚ presidium invited party members who would like top its list of candidates to submit their names for a primary election that will be held by the party, the SITA newswire wrote. If no one shows interest, the party’s chairman, Mikulas Dzurinda, will automatically head the SDKÚ slate.
The names of persons to head the election slate can be submitted only by the party presidium, the leadership of a regional organisation or by at least 300 members of the party.
The cabinet of Iveta Radičová lost a confidence vote in parliament on October 11 but Radičová will remain the leader of an interim cabinet, with significantly restricted powers, until the elections next March.
