At a meeting with European Council President Herman Van Rompuy in New York on Thursday, September 22, Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radičová told him that the eurozone financial stability mechanism is becoming a hot topic in Slovak politics and that “it is even being connected to the future of the current government”, according to a Government Office press statement.
She also informed Van Rompuy about the positions of the Slovak political parties, explaining that Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), one of the coalition parties, opposes the stability mechanism. According to Radičová, the largest opposition party Smer has expressed verbal support for the mechanism yet refuses to support it in a vote in parliament.
The prime minister also repeated the position that for her the ruling coalition’s stability is a priority, and that she considers it the only way for Slovakia to carry out important reforms and adopt the 2012 budget, the SITA newswire reported, citing the press department of the Government Office.
