More than 100 municipalities in eastern and northern Slovakia have been seriously affected by flooding caused by days of heavy rain. While only 72 people have so far been evacuated, compared to over 3,000 during disastrous 1998 flooding, more rain was forecast for late July, and it was feared damages could increase.
The rain has on the other hand helped crops, where wheat harvests so far are yielding 38% more per hectare than during the drought-stricken year 2000.
