The range of citizens of non-EU countries who will – after fulfilling all due conditions – be eligible for long-term residence should be widened after May 2013 to include people who are granted asylum or additional protection. This stems from an amendment to the law on stays by foreigners that was sent to its second reading in parliament on Thursday, January 31.
The Interior Ministry said, as quoted by the TASR newswire, that the amendment includes requirements implied from practice; e.g. granting and renewing temporary stays with the intent of doing business, or the temporary stay of Slovaks abroad – with almost all of the administrative duties connected with them being cancelled. The changes also involve assisted voluntary return, the duty to report foreigners’ whereabouts and various legal entities, as well as issuing documents confirming the stay.
The government also proposed amending the law on asylum: this would change the reasons for the asylum to expire or end, and for asylum proceedings to be halted; and the institute of additional protection would change. In the law on the Police Corps, a change in taking the identity of foreigners and an amendment of powers and authorisations when guarding borders are proposed. Within the process of gradually building up of an Integrated System of Controlling Outer Borders, the merger of the of the border and alien police services has been proposed, TASR wrote.
