Re: Life in the EU without tobacco?, Volume 11, Number 14, April 11 - April 17, 2005
This whole business of making smokers' lives miserable is no more than a populist craze.
It is politically incorrect (virtually criminal) at the moment for a scientist to claim that for millions of years we, homo sapiens, lived in caves that were heated during winter with log fires without there being a proper chimney and that as a result the human species is likely to genetically remember those smokey cave days.
Hence the satisfaction a portion of this species derives from smoking a pipe, a cigarette or a cigar.
And quite apart from that, not allowing people to smoke in bars is somewhat the equivalent of forbidding knives, yet gladly allowing guns, in a mafia hangout. Unless of course this anti-smoking thing is merely the first step taken in an attempt to close bars altogether worldwide.
Next up will be the hounding of obese people, in the course of which restaurants, fast food outlets and car factories will be forced out of business.
