I find this astonishing. When I left Slovakia in 2000, most people were relieved to see the end of the utterly corrupt Mečiar regime, Slota was reduced to something of a laughingstock and Fico was just a cutsey frat boy hoping to get noticed. Very little of Slovakia's progress and reintegration into western Europe would have come about had they and that frat-boy-turned-Dracula remained in power. The next few years will be interesting, and I can only hope for my favourite country that will be the extent of it. The old cliche remains true - be careful what you wish for.
