The problem [Slovakia's lack of foreign students] is so much deeper than just a language issue, though that is first and foremost in the minds of most people. Slovakia will never be a destination for students like France or Germany. Not only are those countries much bigger, but also studying there can be an asset both linguistically and socially for many people. It is sort of chic.
Slovakia sounds too downtrodden to many people and therefore doesn't get the respect it should in academic circles. But of course, I didn't touch on the fact that an education here in Slovakia is of very little use in some other countries. If I study medicine here, it won't be recognized in Canada for instance, so where is the incentive for someone to study if those studies limit the graduate to working in a few places in Central and Eastern Europe?
