Re: Slovak brewery up for sale, Flash News, January 24 - January 30, 2005
I enjoyed working at Topvar once for a fortnight with an Ethiopian son of someone high up in government on a "study" trip on beer brewing. This was back in 1986 or 1987 so hopefully Ethiopia now has a budding beer brewing industry.
What sticks in my memory most is the maintenance worker of the bottling line who was able to drink the 500ml bottle in about 5 seconds without taking a second breath. He had been working there for about 20 years then and had a waist the size of a whale. I'd like to know if he's retired yet.
The other interesting thing was that all workers were allowed to take home a six-pack of beer at the end of the day. When I did not take mine the Ethiopian gladly took it as well, and I later found he had a good side-business going at the hotel. After that I took my share too.
In my opinion Topvar needs this change [of ownership] and a good shake-up will only result in better practices and a stronger company.
