The statement by the Slovak bishops' spokesperson Marián Gavenda defies comprehension ("Priests' mistresses break long silence", By Kristína Havasová, Vol. 8 No. 6, February 18-24).
Consider an analogy: the state supports (serial) monogamy as an institution, so there is little point in discussing what to do about bigamists. Absurd!
Likewise, precisely because the Slovak Church supports priestly celibacy, it is a matter of institutional order as well as natural justice to address abuses and provide redress for the victims. Entirely aside from the wisdom or fairness of priestly celibacy itself, the bishops must stand behind their commitments and protect all members of their flock.
