I'm reminded of a train ride I took from Frankfurt to Berlin the summer after the Wall came down. With few exceptions nearly all East German homes were surrounded by gardens. They had every square inch cultivated and it was not just one every once in awhile it was nearly every single one.

I remember thinking that if every home in suburban America cultivated its half- and quarter-acre yards to a similar degree the effect on the environment and the world economy would be fantastic.

In the US it is lawnmowers and video games, gardening is a thing of the past. The future is packaged food at a convenience store.

Yes, I agree the future is in packaging, distribution, sterilization and tamper resistant containers but I think the future is also getting the infinite number of suburban American homes to look like the ones I saw in East Germany years ago.It is just wasted land not to be producing oxygen, let alone food for a local economy.
